Packing cubes!!

Little fabric boxes... to put inside another box. I genuinely couldn’t understand why anyone would spend money on them. Surely I could just... fold my clothes??

That was when I realized travel might have more “must-have” products than almost any other hobby. Tell someone you’re going on a trip, and the recommendations start flying. Better luggage. AirTags. Portable chargers. eSIMs. Neck pillows. Apparently they’re all completely life-changing!!

The problem is... most travel products don’t actually deserve the hype.

Every new gadget promises it’ll completely transform the way you travel, and half of them end up forgotten in a drawer a few weeks later.

But every now and then... the internet gets one completely right!!

So here are 33 travel products I was convinced I didn’t need... until I finally gave them a chance. Some I refused to buy for years. Others only ended up in my suitcase because I got so tired of hearing everyone rave about them.

Either way... I hate admitting it, but they were right!! 😂

1. These packing cubes are one of the few travel products that actually deserve all the hype!! I genuinely thought people only bought them because they looked organized on Instagram. Turns out... they really do save space, keep everything tidy, and stop you from unpacking your entire suitcase just to find one pair of socks. I get it now. 😂

2. My suitcase has only gone missing twice... which was apparently enough to convince me to buy AirTags. Being able to open my phone and see exactly where it was the whole time? Worth every penny!!

3. I don’t think anyone needs to travel with a huge makeup bag. My Merit Intro Set has slowly replaced almost everything else I used to pack... and honestly, I don’t miss any of it.

4. Flying became so much more enjoyable the day I bought these noise-canceling headphones. The crying baby is probably still there... I just don’t need to know about it.

5. For years, I used my parents’ old suitcases and honestly thought luggage was just... luggage. Then I finally bought the Away Bigger Carry-On. I hate to admit it, but everyone was right about this one!!

6. Finding a good personal item is weirdly difficult. Most bags are either too bulky or don't hold nearly as much as you expect. My Away Everywhere Bag somehow gets both right. (Away... if you're reading this, my inbox is open. 😉)

7. Tiny travel bottles have leaked in my toiletry bag more times than I’d like to admit. Cadence Capsules finally put an end to that... and somehow made me feel much more organized than I actually am.

8. I used to think airport lounges were an unnecessary luxury. Then I got stuck at the airport for six hours. Unlimited coffee, Wi-Fi, comfy chairs, snacks... yeah, I get it now!!

9. My phone works overtime when I travel. Google Maps. Boarding passes. Translation apps. Restaurant recommendations... and about 700 photos of the exact same sunset. My Anker Portable Charger has rescued me more times than I can count!!

10. At home, I’ll choose a physical book every single time. On vacation? My Kindle wins without even trying. Carrying an entire library in my backpack is pretty hard to argue with. ✨

11. Good walking shoes are probably the best travel purchase you'll ever make. Your feet won't care how stylish you looked after 25,000 steps!! These days, my Salomon XT-6s come on almost every trip.

12. I’m convinced airports make half their profits selling bottled water. 😂 After paying €6 one too many times, I finally started carrying an Owala FreeSip everywhere. It keeps my water cold for hours... and my wallet a little happier too!!

13. I'm usually pretty skeptical of travel pillows... but the Trtl Neck Pillow is the one I keep coming back to. It actually supports my neck, doesn't take up half my carry-on, and somehow makes sleeping on planes so much easier!!

14. A luggage scale sounded like one of those gadgets I’d use once and forget about. Turns out... I apparently have a shopping problem. 🛍️

15. I didn’t think I needed Loop earplugs... until I stayed in one too many hotels with paper-thin walls. Now I keep a pair in every bag, and they've rescued more nights of sleep than I can count!!

16. One of my favorite ways to explore a new city has nothing to do with sightseeing. I book a Pilates or spinning class through ClassPass, and I almost always leave feeling a little more connected to the place. (plus it's such a fun way to meet locals!!).

17. Someone once told me to pack a portable fan and I laughed. Then I spent a week sightseeing in 38°C heat. I wasn’t laughing anymore. It now comes with me on every summer trip!!

18. I didn’t realize how terrible my airplane sleep was until I bought a proper eye mask. My Slip Sleep Mask now comes on every flight... and I sleep so much better because of it.

19. Ever spent twenty minutes untangling necklaces before dinner? This jewelry organizer solved that problem surprisingly quickly. Ask me how I know. 🙃

20. Hanging toiletry bags always felt a bit over the top. Then I realized being able to see everything at once is actually wonderful. Mine is from Away, and I use it on every trip.

21. Digging through your backpack looking for the right charging cable gets old very quickly. Keeping everything inside a little tech organizer isn’t exciting... but it does make life a whole lot easier.

22. Travel insurance is one of those things you hope you completely waste your money on. I still book SafetyWing every trip... and hopefully I’ll never need to use it!!!

23. I really wanted merino wool to be overrated. It's definitely not cheap... which is exactly why it's so annoying that it's actually brilliant. 😂 My favorite pieces are from Unbound Merino—they're soft, don't hold onto smells, and let me pack far fewer clothes!!

24. Every time I leave my Uniqlo Puffertech Jacket at home, I end up regretting it. Somehow... I always need it. Even when I'm convinced I won't.

25. One thing I’ll happily pay for? Airport transfers. After a long flight, I just want to get to my hotel without thinking. I usually book through Welcome Pickups, especially in places like Marrakech or Cairo, where it’s nice knowing someone is waiting for you!!

26. Landing in a new country without internet feels strangely stressful now. Setting up my Airalo eSIM before I fly has become part of every trip... it means I can order an Uber, open Google Maps, or message my family the second I land!!

27. I always thought travel steamers were a little over the top. Then I packed linen on vacation. If your trip includes weddings, cruises, or nice dinners... you’ll be very happy you brought one.

28. The smallest thing in my suitcase has probably rescued more outfits than anything else... a stain remover pen. Tiny, inexpensive, and surprisingly useful!!

29. Keeping my passport, boarding pass, cards, and cash in four different places was apparently my hobby for years. A passport wallet finally brought a little order to the chaos. (I use the Bottega Veneta Passport Holder, although Leatherology also makes beautiful ones.)

30. I got tired of coming home from trips with 600 photos... and somehow only three of me. My JOBY GorillaPod solved both problems, and now I’m actually in my own vacation pictures. 📸

31. I used to think guided tours were for people who didn’t like planning. Then I booked one in Kyoto and learned more in one afternoon than I would’ve wandering around by myself for three days. Now I book most of mine through GetYourGuide.

32. A portable clothesline isn’t exactly glamorous. Saving money on hotel laundry absolutely is!!

33. Hotel rooms never seem to have enough outlets. Between my phone, laptop, watch, Kindle, camera, and portable charger, I'm somehow always competing for plugs. A lightweight power strip completely solved that problem... and now I never travel without one!!

🏨 Where to Stay in Marrakech

If you’re wondering where to stay in Marrakech, my biggest piece of advice is simple: stay in a riad at least once!!

Riads are traditional Moroccan homes transformed into boutique hotels, hidden behind unassuming doors in the Medina. From the outside, you’d never guess what was inside... but step through the entrance and you’ll find quiet courtyards, rooftop terraces, trickling fountains, and an instant escape from the chaos outside.

For me, staying in a riad is what makes Marrakech feel like Marrakech!!

🤍 My Favourite Riads

These are the riads I’d happily stay in again—and the ones I’d recommend without hesitation to anyone visiting Marrakech for the first time.

• Riad Brummell (where I stayed!!) — The riad I'd recommend first. Stylish, brilliantly located, and part of the same group as Maison Brummell Majorelle and Riad Aïum. You really can't go wrong with any of them!!

• IZZA — One of the coolest boutique hotels in the city. Think contemporary art, gorgeous interiors, and another incredible rooftop.

• Riad Joya (where I also stayed!!) — Small, elegant, and unbelievably peaceful. The service here is genuinely some of the best I’ve experienced anywhere!!

• Riad Roca — Adults-only and wonderfully calm. The pool is the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring the Medina.

• Riad Solange — Just five rooms, gorgeous interiors, and a wellness-focused atmosphere. Perfect for couples or anyone looking to slow down.

✨ If You Feel Like Splurging...

Even if staying here isn’t in the budget, I’d still recommend visiting for lunch, afternoon tea, or sunset drinks. They’re some of the most spectacular hotels I’ve ever visited—and they’re absolutely worth seeing!!

• La Mamounia — The city's most iconic hotel. Even if you're not staying here, I'd still come for afternoon tea and a stroll through the gardens.

• Royal Mansour — One of the most extraordinary hotels I've ever visited. From the private riads to the breathtaking spa, every detail is exceptional.

• El Fenn — If you’re only visiting one rooftop in Marrakech, make it this one!! Come for sunset cocktails, browse the boutique, or stay the night if you can.

• Berber Lodge — A beautiful escape just outside the city. Perfect for a long, lazy lunch before heading towards Agafay.

• Amanjena — If your dream holiday involves doing absolutely nothing except relaxing by the pool... this is the place.

🏕️ Spending a Night in the Agafay Desert?

Most people visit Agafay as a day trip... but I honestly think staying overnight is what makes it so special. Watching the sunset, having dinner under the stars, and waking up to complete silence is one of my favourite memories from Marrakech.

• Scarabeo Camp — The desert camp I’d happily stay at again. Incredible food, beautiful tents, and one of the most magical sunsets I’ve ever seen.

• La Pause — More rustic, slower, and wonderfully peaceful. If your goal is to completely switch off for a night, I’d choose this one.

🗓️ The Perfect 3-Day Marrakech Itinerary

If I only had three days in Marrakech, this is exactly how I’d spend them. A mix of iconic sights, unforgettable meals, beautiful riads, hidden gems, and plenty of time to simply wander... because that’s when Marrakech feels its most magical.

Day One: The Marrakech Everyone Falls in Love With

If it’s your first time in Marrakech, today is all about embracing the chaos!!

Think colourful souks, hidden courtyards, rooftop terraces, and little alleyways where getting lost becomes part of the adventure. You’ll walk a lot today (comfortable shoes are essential!!), but I promise you’ll love every minute.

☕ Breakfast

Start your morning at Bacha Coffee.

Yes, it’s touristy... and yes, I’d still go every single time!!

The coffee menu is enormous, the pastries are genuinely delicious, and the café is every bit as beautiful as you’ve probably seen online.

My biggest tip? Arrive before it opens (I’d aim for around 9:30am). Tell the staff you’re there for the café and they’ll hand you a buzzer while you wander around the Dar El Bacha courtyard instead of standing in line.

Before you leave, grab a bag of coffee too. It makes such a good souvenir!!

🌿 Morning

Next, head to Ben Youssef Madrasa. If there’s one building I’d never skip in Marrakech, it’s this one!!

The intricate tilework, carved cedar wood, and peaceful courtyard are even more impressive in person. Arrive early and you’ll actually have time to admire all the details before the tour groups arrive.

From there, walk over to Le Jardin Secret. It isn’t huge, but I’d never skip it. And before you leave, climb up to the rooftop... the views over the Medina are so worth it!!

Then comes my favourite part of the day...

Put Google Maps away (it honestly struggles in the Medina anyway 😂) and just wander. Some of my favourite cafés, boutiques, and hidden courtyards weren’t planned at all—they were places I stumbled across by accident.

If you’d rather have a few places saved, these are the ones I’d head straight to:

• Place des Épices — The square I'd always start in. Perfect for browsing boutiques, picking up souvenirs, or simply soaking up the atmosphere.

• Mustapha Blaoui — Beautiful lamps, baskets, and home décor.

• Herboristerie Avicenne — Spices, teas, argan oil, and easy-to-pack souvenirs. It’s also one of my favourite photo spots!!

• Koutoubia Lamps — The place I’d go if you’re looking for a traditional Moroccan lantern.

• V. Barkowski — Beautiful linen clothing, towels, and homeware.

• LRNCE Studio (short taxi ride away) — My favourite ceramics, furniture, and homeware shop in Marrakech.

🍴 Lunch

By now you’ll definitely be ready for a long lunch!!

Book a table at Le Jardin. Hidden behind an unassuming doorway, it opens into a lush courtyard that feels a world away from the busy Medina outside. Order the pastilla, the zucchini fritters, and one of the fresh juices... they’re all so good!!

🌇 Afternoon

After lunch, wander towards Koutoubia Mosque and Jemaa el-Fna. I’d actually recommend visiting the square twice—once now, then again after dark.

During the day it’s busy but relatively relaxed. By evening, it transforms completely with musicians, food stalls, and an atmosphere that’s impossible not to get caught up in.

One thing I’d personally skip? The monkeys, snakes, and henna artists. If you stop, expect to pay afterwards—and it can sometimes feel a little uncomfortable!!

If you still have some energy left, make time for La Mamounia. And if you have a little longer, visit Royal Mansour too. Even if you’re not staying at either hotel, they’re part of the Marrakech experience.

Go for a drink, wander through the gardens, and soak it all in!!

🌅 Sunset

Around an hour before sunset, head to El Fenn. If you’re only visiting one rooftop in Marrakech, make it this one!!

Order a cocktail, settle in, and watch the call to prayer echo across the rooftops as the city slowly turns golden. Before you leave, don’t miss the boutique downstairs either—it’s one of those shops that’s almost impossible to walk out of empty-handed!!

🍽️ Dinner

For your first night, book Comptoir Darna.

It’s lively, glamorous, and such a fun introduction to Marrakech after dark. Expect incredible Moroccan food, live music, dancers, and excellent cocktails.

Yes, it’ll probably be one of the more expensive meals of your trip... but I’d happily book it again.

When I found Zedwell Capsule Hotel for just £35 a night, I genuinely thought I’d found the bargain of the year. It sounded far too good to be true... so, of course, I booked it!!

Then I made the mistake of reading the reviews.

Some people absolutely loved it. Others compared the capsules to coffins. My friends thought I was completely crazy for sleeping in a pod for an entire week... and the more I read, the more convinced I became that I’d made a terrible decision.

Seven nights later, I couldn’t have been more surprised!!

Some things were much better than I expected. A couple definitely weren’t. And there were a few things I really wish I’d known before booking because I would’ve packed (and planned!!) very differently.

So if you’re wondering whether London’s £35 capsule hotel is actually worth it—or you’re just curious what it’s really like sleeping in one of the city’s tiniest hotel rooms—here’s everything I’d tell a friend before they booked!!

Prime Central Location

The location was one of the biggest reasons I booked Zedwell Capsule Hotel... and honestly, I don’t think you could ask for much better!!

Right in the heart of Piccadilly, you’re within walking distance of so many of London’s biggest attractions. The West End is just a few minutes away (I somehow managed to watch four musicals in seven days!!), Chinatown is practically next door, and Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey are all within easy walking distance.

I know this isn't the area everyone recommends... but as a solo traveler, I loved staying here!! After a full day exploring, I could simply walk back to my hotel without worrying about the Tube, buses, or expensive taxis.

Yes, it’s busy. Yes, it’s touristy. But if it’s your first time in London, I honestly think it’s one of the best places you can stay!!

Getting There & Check-In

Getting to Zedwell Capsule Hotel was much easier than I expected!!

Instead of taking the airport express, I hopped on the Southern train into central London. It only takes a few minutes longer but costs roughly half the price, making it one of my favorite London travel hacks!! (I share more little money-saving tips like this in my Europe travel tips guide!!)

Once I arrived, check-in was super easy. I used one of the self-service kiosks, scanned my booking, picked up my keycard, and was in my pod just a few minutes later.

The staff were also lovely. I asked if I could have a bottom pod (it’s always worth asking if you have a preference!!), and they were more than happy to help.

Inside the Capsule: What It’s Really Like

I’ll be honest... this was the part I was most nervous about!!

The capsules at Zedwell Capsule Hotel look tiny in photos, and after reading reviews comparing them to coffins, I was fully expecting the worst.

Thankfully, they felt much bigger once I climbed inside!! I’m 1.72m tall and had no problem sitting upright, with plenty of space above my head. The ventilation was excellent too, so I never once felt claustrophobic!!

What surprised me most, though, was how private it felt. Unlike a hostel dorm, you can close the door, switch off the world, and have your own little space to relax after a busy day exploring London.

Honestly, I looked forward to climbing back into my pod every evening!!

For such a small space, it’s incredibly well designed. You get adjustable lighting, two USB charging ports, hooks, Egyptian cotton sheets, a surprisingly comfortable mattress, and a lockable pod, so I never worried about leaving my things while I was out exploring.

Bathrooms & Shower Facilities

I’ll be honest... I wasn’t expecting much from the shared bathrooms. They actually ended up being one of the biggest surprises of my stay!!

They’re huge, spotless, and during my entire week at Zedwell Capsule Hotel, I never had to wait for a shower. Every time I walked in, someone seemed to be cleaning, and honestly, they felt cleaner than the bathrooms in some hotels I’ve stayed in!!

I also loved that they’re completely separate from the sleeping area. It keeps the pods much quieter, especially first thing in the morning and late at night.

The showers themselves were great too. Each one has a little bench, plenty of hooks for your clothes and towel, and enough space to get changed comfortably.

My only real complaints? The water temperature couldn’t be adjusted (it was a little too hot for me!!), and you have to keep pressing a button to keep the water running... which gets a bit annoying when you’re trying to enjoy a shower.

7 Things I’d Know Before Booking Again

If I stayed at Zedwell Capsule Hotel again, these are the little things I'd want to know beforehand...

• Security is excellent – There’s a security guard at the entrance, and you’ll need your keycard to access the building, dorms, and bathrooms. As a solo traveler, I felt completely safe throughout my stay!!

• There aren't any lockers. Most people left their larger suitcases locked outside their pods overnight and stored them inside during the day. My Away suitcase worked perfectly, but next time I'd probably bring my Everywhere Bag instead.

• This isn't a social hostel – There's no restaurant, bar, kitchen, or common room, but there is free Wi-Fi throughout the property. Most people are simply there for a good night's sleep rather than to meet other travelers.

• Bring the right padlock – My travel padlock didn't fit the luggage loops, but thankfully the staff gave me one for free. If you're bringing your own, make sure it's the right size!!!

• Skip the hotel's luggage storage. You can pay extra for early check-in, late check-out, and luggage storage. But I actually used Radical Storage instead and found it much cheaper.

• Book the female-only dorm (if you’re traveling solo). This is the option I booked, and I’d happily choose it again.

• Check whether towels are included. Some room types charge an extra £5. If yours don’t, I always travel with a lightweight microfiber towel just in case.

If capsule hotels aren’t really your thing, Zedwell also has a regular hotel just around the corner called Zedwell Piccadilly Circus. I’ve stayed there with friends before, and it’s another great budget-friendly option if you’d prefer a private room and your own bathroom!!

What I Loved (And Didn’t Love)

After spending seven nights at Zedwell Capsule Hotel, these were my biggest takeaways...

What I Loved

• The price – At around £35 per night, it's one of the best-value places I've found in central London. During Christmas, that honestly felt like a bargain!!

• The pods– I genuinely loved having my own little space. It felt so much more private (and comfortable!) than sleeping in a traditional hostel dorm.

• The location – Being able to walk almost everywhere saved me so much time—and money!! The Big Ben, Chinatown, Covent Garden, and the Tube are all right on your doorstep.

• The cleanliness – Especially the bathrooms. They were spotless every single day, and I constantly saw staff cleaning throughout the hotel.

• The privacy & security – Between the lockable pod, keycard access, security guard, and female-only dorms, I felt completely comfortable staying here on my own!!

What I Didn’t Love

• No natural light – You completely lose track of time inside the capsule. It didn’t bother me too much, but I know it won’t be for everyone.

• Limited space – You really do just get a bed... but that's kind of the whole point. I was only there to sleep, so it didn't bother me, but packing cubes definitely helped keep everything organized!!

• It's not a social hostel – If you're hoping to meet other travelers, this probably isn't the right place. Most people simply come here to sleep.

• The shower buttons. Having to press the button every few seconds to keep the water running got a little annoying after a while.

• The elevator can be slow. There’s only one, so you might have to wait during busy times. Thankfully, the stairs are always an option!!

The Verdict: Is Zedwell Capsule Hotel Worth It?

Honestly... yes!!

When I first booked Zedwell Capsule Hotel, I thought it might end up being one of my biggest travel mistakes. Instead, it turned out to be one of my favorite budget stays in London!!

No, it’s not a luxury hotel. But if you’re looking for a clean, safe, comfortable place to sleep in one of London’s best locations, I genuinely think it’s hard to beat—especially for around £35 a night.

I’d happily stay here again, and next time I’d probably book even earlier to grab one of the cheapest rooms!!

1. Not every tourist attraction is overrated. Sometimes things become famous because they’re genuinely incredible. The Colosseum is famous for a reason. The Giza Pyramids are famous for a reason. We don’t get extra points for pretending we weren’t impressed!!

2. The hotel absolutely matters. I never understood the whole “we’re only sleeping there anyway” argument. You’re telling me the place where you spend 8+ hours every day doesn’t matter?!

3. If you haven’t contributed to planning the girls’ trip, you’ve forfeited your right to complain. The group chat was open for suggestions weeks ago.

4. Carry-on only travel is not the personality trait the internet wants it to be. I like options. I like extra outfits. And I refuse to spend two weeks stressing over whether my one pair of pants works with every shirt I packed. My checked bag and I are doing just fine (and yes, my Away suitcase has survived some truly questionable baggage handlers).

5. Most people try to do way too much on vacation. If your itinerary requires military-level precision, you’ve planned a business trip, not a holiday.

6. I don’t think every city needs four days. Some places are wonderful for 24 hours. Others deserve a month. We need to stop pretending every destination requires the exact same amount of time.

7. Staying connected is non-negotiable when you’re traveling alone. An Airalo eSIM and an Anker portable charger are two things I never leave home without.

8. The best restaurant meal of your trip will probably be the one you found by accident while trying to get somewhere else.

9. Getting to the airport early is underrated. Sitting calmly with a coffee is infinitely better than sprinting through Terminal B while questioning every life decision you’ve ever made.

10. Window seats are elite and I will not be taking questions at this time.

11. Every traveler has one weirdly specific item they refuse to leave home without. Mine changes occasionally, but there’s always something. A Kindle. A hair towel. An eye mask. We all have our thing.

12. Some destinations are worth visiting more than once. The obsession with always going somewhere new feels a little overrated to me. If you love a place, go back!!

13. I love public transportation, but give me a rental car in Mallorca, Lake Como, or the Cotswolds every single time. The freedom is worth it. (I usually use Discover Cars.)

14. “Travel like a local” is often terrible advice. I’m not a local. I’m a visitor. And that’s okay. If you’re the only white girl in a small town in China, you’re probably not blending in anyway.

15. There is no excuse for not learning a few words of the local language before a trip. Nobody expects fluency, but “hello,” “please,” and “thank you” should be the bare minimum.

16. You didn’t fly halfway around the world to eat McDonald’s. Try the local food.

17. Some experiences are worth paying for. I learned more in one day on a private Kyoto tour than I would have from three days of wandering around with Google Maps.

18. Travel gets significantly more enjoyable when you stop trying to impress people who aren’t on the trip with you. Not every moment needs to be photographed, posted, or turned into content.

19. Red-eye flights should only be booked when absolutely necessary. I know they’re efficient. I also know they turn me into a shell of a human being for the next 48 hours.

20. Peak season is often overrated. Japan in the fall is every bit as beautiful as cherry blossom season, and Rome in January is infinitely more enjoyable than Rome in August.

21. Not every trip needs to be life-changing. Sometimes you just want a beach, a pool, and a cocktail. That’s a perfectly good reason to get on a plane.

22. The older I get, the more I understand paying for convenience. Direct flights. Airport transfers. Better hotels. Airalo eSIMs. At some point you’re paying for peace, not luxury.

23. I’d rather spend money on a nicer hotel than luxury shopping. One gives me memories. The other usually ends up forgotten in the back of a closet.

24. Packing cubes are one of the few travel products that actually deserve the hype. I resisted them for years. I was wrong. (I use these ones and they’re excellent.)

25. You can learn a shocking amount about someone from how they behave in an airport. Airports reveal character very, very quickly.

26. The best souvenir is usually something you’ll actually use when you get home. A handmade bowl, a piece of art, a cookbook, a coffee mug you’ll use every morning. I don’t need another keychain reminding me I went somewhere.

27. Hotel chains are great, but places like La Residencia in Mallorca and Casa Monti in Rome are the hotels I still think about long after the trip is over.

20. Restaurant reservations are not optional in certain cities. Learn this lesson before you’re hungry, jet-lagged, and getting rejected by your fifth restaurant of the night.

21. In certain destinations, a food tour is one of the best things you can do. My Shinjuku food tour in Tokyo ended up being one of the highlights of the entire trip.

22. Some museums are worth three hours. Others are worth fifteen minutes. Let’s stop pretending they’re all equally interesting.

23. You don’t need to earn rest on vacation. You don’t need to complete twelve activities before you’re allowed to sit by the pool. The pool is the activity.

24. You don’t need as many beauty products as you think you do. This Merit Intro Set is basically my entire travel makeup bag at this point.

25. Solo travel is much less intimidating than people think. You’re mostly just a person getting coffee, wandering around, and figuring things out as you go.

26. Traveling with the wrong person is significantly scarier. I’d rather explore a new country alone than spend a week arguing about where to eat.

35. It is completely okay to skip a famous attraction if you’re genuinely not interested in it. You do not get extra credit for being miserable on vacation.

36. Hostels are one of the most misunderstood parts of travel. They’re not just for broke 20-year-olds. Some of my favorite Hostelworld finds felt more like boutique hotels with a built-in social life!!

37. I only take safety advice from people who’ve actually been there. If I listened to the internet, I’d be convinced every destination on Earth was on the verge of collapse.

38. Travel insurance feels like a waste of money... until it doesn’t. I use SafetyWing and hope I never have to think about it again!!

39. Waking up early is one of the most underrated travel hacks. Some of my favorite travel memories happened before breakfast.

40. I know cruises have a loyal fan base, and that’s okay!! But spending a week surrounded by thousands of people is not my idea of a relaxing vacation.

41. Respecting local culture isn’t optional. You’re a guest. Act like one.

42. One of the easiest ways to feel like a local is by taking a workout class. I use ClassPass to find different studios and activities wherever I’m traveling. (20 bonus credits if you sign up with my link!!)

43. Business class is absolutely worth it if you can comfortably afford it. I didn’t understand the hype either... and then I flew business class.

44. Budget airlines are not the enemy. Sometimes the $35 flight is exactly what you need. Not every trip has to be a luxury experience.

45. Pre-booking an airport transfer is almost always worth it. Nothing says “welcome to vacation” quite like dragging your suitcase around an unfamiliar train station after a long-haul flight.

46. The perfect itinerary does not exist. No matter how much research you do, you’ll miss something. That’s part of the experience.

47. Elephant pants are the official uniform of backpackers in Southeast Asia. I own a pair. They’re still terrible.

48. At home, I’ll choose a physical book over an e-reader every single time. When I’m traveling? My Kindle is one of the first things I pack.

49. Most travel problems feel catastrophic in the moment and hilarious six months later. Unfortunately, this is how it always works.

50. Things usually work out. Not always exactly as planned. Not always on your timeline. But most trips end the same way: with a good story and the realization that you worried far more than necessary.

The Ultimate Boat Day Essentials List

After years of boat days, these are the things I pack every single time. Most are pretty simple. But every single one earned its place after I forgot it once... and immediately regretted it!!

The Basics

• A beach bag or tote – One of those things you’ll use all summer long!! I usually carry a straw bag, but this tote is such a good option too. It’s roomy, easy to carry, and fits everything I need without feeling oversized or bulky.

• Sunscreen – The one thing I never forget!! The sun always feels stronger on the water, especially with it reflecting off the sea all day. I always pack this face sunscreen, this body sunscreen, and an SPF lip balm. Honestly, I use all three every single boat day!!

• A hat – Such an easy way to stay protected from the sun (and hide post-swim hair!!). I’ve worn this one on so many boat days that it basically lives in my beach bag all summer.

• Sunglasses – A boat day essential for obvious reasons. I finally bought the KHAITE x Oliver Peoples 1993C Sunglasses this year and completely understand the hype now!!

• A towel – I never do a boat day without one. I love this towel because it dries quickly, packs down small, and doesn’t take up half my bag like a traditional beach towel.

• A swimsuit, cover-up & change of clothes – Trust me on this one!! Boat days have a habit of turning into lunch, drinks, or dinner afterward. Having something dry to change into makes such a difference by the end of the day. These are some of the exact pieces I reach for every summer.

• Water & snacks – Even when they’re included, I usually bring extra. Somehow they always seem to disappear by the end of the day!! I never leave without my insulated water bottle either.

Small Boat Day Essentials That Make a Big Difference

These aren’t necessarily things you need, but they’re the items I’m always happy I packed once the day gets going!!

• A hair brush – Wind, salt water, and long hair can be a terrible combination (trust me, I know!!). I always throw this brush in my bag, along with my Big Effing Clip from Emi Jay for after swimming. A good leave-in conditioner is a lifesaver too.

• A dry bag – Definitely not essential, but one of the most useful things I bring. I use this one to protect my phone and camera during the day, then throw my wet swimsuit inside before heading home.

• Motion sickness tablets – If you don’t spend much time on boats, bring them just in case!! I’ve seen plenty of people feel completely fine at the marina and very different an hour later (and once you’re feeling seasick, it’s usually too late!).

• Swim shoes – Especially useful in Greece, Croatia, and anywhere with rocky beaches or sea urchins. Personally, I usually just wear my Christopher Esber Jo Flip-Flops or Teva Sandals since you’ll probably be taking them off once you get onboard anyway.

• A silk bandana – One of those little extras that ends up being surprisingly useful. I use mine for extra sun protection, windy boat rides, or tied around my beach bag as a cute accessory. I love this one from Madewell!!

Boat Day Extras Worth Packing

You definitely don’t need any of these, but they’re the little extras that make a boat day even better. I don’t pack all of them every time, but I almost always bring at least a few!!

• Entertainment – I almost always bring my Kindle because there’s nothing better than reading in the sun between swims. If I’m with friends, I’ll usually bring the Bose SoundLink Max too. It’s waterproof, the battery lasts forever, and it’s perfect for music during longer boat days!!

• Snorkel gear – Not essential, but I like bringing my own mask and snorkel so I’m not relying on whatever happens to be onboard. Unfortunately, I can’t find the set I usually travel with, but any compact set will do the job!!

• A few beauty essentials– I don’t usually wear much makeup on boat days, but I’ll always throw a few favorites into my bag. Right now that’s the Rhode Peptide Lip Tint, Rhode Glazing Milk, and the Merit Flush Balm!! Just enough to freshen up before heading to lunch or dinner afterward!!

• A portable fan – Not something I bring on every boat day, but an absolute must for overnight boat stays during summer!! This is the one I travel with, and it’s surprisingly powerful for how compact it is.

• An Anker portable charger – Between photos, videos, maps, and music, batteries disappear surprisingly fast on boat days. I always pack my Anker power bank because it’s compact, reliable, and easily lasts all day.

• The essentials – Don’t forget your ID, keys, wallet, and any booking confirmations. It sounds obvious, but these are usually the most important things in your bag!!

💙 The Secret to a Great Boat Day

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this guide, it’s that boat days are supposed to be fun!!

Some of these surprised me. Some took a little getting used to. And a few only made sense after years of traveling.

So if you love travel as much as I do—or you’re already dreaming about your next big trip—here are seven travel realities I wish someone had told me sooner!!

1. Travel Is a Lot More Work Than It Looks

Most people only see the fun part of travel. The beautiful hotels. The amazing meals. The beach days. The sunset photos that make everything look so easy.

What they don’t see is everything happening behind the scenes.

The flight research. The hotel comparisons. The visa requirements. The airport transfers. The endless tabs open on your laptop while trying to figure out the best way to get from A to B.

The longer I travel, the more I realize that great trips rarely happen by accident. They’re usually the result of a lot of planning, research, and way more decision-making than most people realize!!

And honestly? I love that part!! Planning a trip is part of the fun for me. But it’s definitely a lot more work than Instagram makes it look.

2. Life Keeps Moving While You’re Away

One of the biggest surprises of traveling more wasn’t the places I visited. It was realizing how much life keeps moving back home while you’re gone.

I knew this, of course... but knowing it and actually experiencing it are two very different things!!

You miss things like:

• Friends getting engaged, married, and having babies

• Birthdays, celebrations, and family gatherings

• Last-minute plans and spontaneous get-togethers

• The little everyday moments you never think twice about until they’re gone

I remember spending Christmas on a beach in Thailand. It was beautiful, sunny, and honestly a lot of fun!! But it was also the first Christmas I’d ever spent away from my family, and for a little while, all I wanted was to be back home.

I’ve mostly come to terms with it now. I try to make it home for Christmas and the big milestones whenever I can, but the truth is that you can’t be everywhere at once.

That’s one of the trade-offs that comes with traveling more!!

3. Travel Gets Less Exciting (And That’s Okay)

I know this might sound strange to anyone who doesn’t get to travel often, and trust me, I never take it for granted!!

But one thing nobody warned me about is that travel eventually starts to feel... normal.

The first time you fly across the world, everything feels exciting. New countries. New foods. New experiences. But after enough trips, some of that novelty naturally starts to fade.

And honestly? That’s okay!!

The longer I travel, the less I find myself chasing big bucket-list experiences and the more I appreciate the smaller things. Finding a hotel I genuinely love. Discovering a beautiful café. Taking a slow morning walk. Watching the sunset from a random beach with no plans at all.

The excitement doesn’t disappear—it just changes. And honestly? Some of my favorite travel memories have come from those smaller moments!!

4. There Isn’t Just One “Right” Way to Live

One of my favorite things about traveling is how quickly it reminds you that there are so many different ways to build a happy life.

The more I travel, the more I realize that so much of what we think is “normal” depends on where we grew up. Success, money, relationships, work, happiness... everyone has a slightly different idea of what those things should look like.

Seeing that firsthand has made me think a lot more carefully about what I want from my own life. Things that felt obvious to me ten years ago don’t always feel quite so obvious anymore.

5. The Changes Follow You Home

People always say travel changes you, and honestly... I think they’re right!!

Not in some dramatic movie-like way where you come home as a completely different person. Most of the changes are much smaller than that, and half the time you don’t even notice them happening (I know I definitely didn’t!!).

Looking back, travel has made me:

• More confident — when you’ve missed flights, gotten lost, and somehow still figured everything out, you start trusting yourself a lot more!!

• More self-aware — spending so much time in new places has taught me a lot about what I actually enjoy, what I don’t, and how I like to spend my time.

• More comfortable doing things alone — whether that’s eating at a restaurant, exploring a new city, or trying something completely new.

• More adaptable — plans change constantly when you travel, and eventually you stop stressing about every little thing!!

• More appreciative of home — travel is amazing, but it also reminds me not to take the people, comforts, and everyday routines in my life for granted.

The funny thing is that these changes don’t stay on the road. The trip ends, but the confidence, perspective, and habits you pick up along the way tend to stick around long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase.

And honestly? That might be one of the best things about travel!!

6. A Plane Ticket Isn’t a Magic Fix

At the same time... travel isn’t a cure-all.

I’ve definitely booked trips hoping they’d solve more problems than they actually did. And I’ve seen plenty of other people do the same after a breakup, a job loss, the loss of someone they love, or another difficult season of life.

To be fair, travel does help!! It gives you space to think, a break from your normal routine, and sometimes a completely different perspective on whatever you’re dealing with.

But wherever you go, you still bring yourself with you. The same worries, habits, and insecurities don’t magically disappear just because you’re looking at them from a canal in Amsterdam or a beach in Mallorca instead of your living room.

If only it were that easy, right?

7. Home Starts To Matter More

One thing that surprised me about traveling more is how much it made me appreciate home.

For a long time, I thought loving travel meant always wanting to be somewhere else. But the older I get, the more I appreciate all the little things waiting for me when I come back.

Family dinners. Friends who already know all my stories. Sleeping in my own bed. Knowing exactly where to buy groceries. Being able to speak without translating every sentence in my head. Not having to Google every little thing before I leave the house.

They’re small things, but after weeks or months away, they start to feel pretty special!!

Why I’d Still Choose Travel Every Time

Travel isn’t perfect. You miss people, flights get delayed, and plans don’t always go the way you imagined. But I’d still choose it every single time!!

The places, people, and experiences have given me some of my favorite memories, and honestly, I can’t imagine my life without them.

For someone who’s never been, what makes Mallorca so special?

Cata: Mallorca is so much more than people expect!!

Most people think of beach clubs, summer holidays, and parties. And yes... there’s definitely some of that. But the island has so many different sides!!

You’ll find beautiful mountain villages, hidden coves (don’t miss the Caves of Artà!), local markets, vineyards, stunning beaches, and some incredible hotels like La Residencia, Grand Hotel Son Net, and Es Racó d’Artà.

I think that's why people keep coming back. Every trip feels a little different... and that's what makes Mallorca so special!!

If you were planning someone’s first trip to Mallorca, where would they go?

Cata: Valldemossa, without question!!

It’s one of the prettiest villages on the island and somehow still feels magical every time I visit. The stone streets, flower-filled balconies, little cafés, and mountain views are exactly what people imagine when they dream about Mallorca.

If you’re visiting this part of the island for the first time, these are the places I always recommend:

• Valldemossa – Wander the pretty stone streets, try a coca de patata from Ca’n Molinas, browse shops like SONMO and Mimossa, and stop for lunch at Es Taller. If you’re visiting in summer, the Chopin Festival is worth checking out too.

• Deià – Grab a coffee at De Monio, wander the village, visit the cemetery for the views, then head down to Cala Deià for a swim and lunch at Ca’s Patró March. And if you have time, stop by La Residencia for a drink — it’s one of the most beautiful hotels in Mallorca!!

• Sóller & Port de Sóller – Take the historic tram to the port and spend a few hours strolling along the waterfront.

• Fornalutx – Tiny, peaceful, and surrounded by mountains. It’s often called one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, and honestly... it’s easy to see why!!

• Sa Foradada – My favorite sunset spot on the island. The views are incredible!!

What are the best beaches in Mallorca?

Cata: That might be the hardest question so far!!

I’d probably choose Es Trenc or Cala Llombards. Es Trenc has beautiful white sand and turquoise water, while Cala Llombards is an easy-to-reach cove with crystal-clear water and a relaxed vibe.

If you’re exploring this part of the island, I’d also recommend:

• Caló des Moro – Probably Mallorca’s most famous beach. It’s absolutely worth seeing, but get there early (really early!!) in summer. While you’re there, don’t miss nearby S’Almunia and Cala Figuera.

• Cala Pi – A beautiful cove surrounded by cliffs and one of my favorite places for a slower beach day. Bring a book, stay awhile, and don’t rush it!

• Santanyí – One of my favorite towns in Mallorca. I love wandering the market, popping into the little shops, and stopping for a long lunch before heading back to the coast.

• Can Ferrereta – Beautiful, peaceful, and incredibly stylish. The spa is fantastic, and it’s worth stopping by for a drink or dinner even if you’re not staying there.

• Parc Natural de Mondragó – Come for the walking trails and stay for the hidden coves and crystal-clear water. It’s the perfect place to spend a slow morning or afternoon.

Where do you go for the best food in Mallorca?

Cata: That’s almost as difficult as choosing a favorite beach!!

Mallorca has so many great restaurants, and honestly, it depends on my mood. Sometimes I want a long lunch by the sea, other times something simple in a village with friends.

A few places I always recommend are:

• Ca’s Patró March – A Mallorca classic overlooking Cala Deià. The seafood is fresh, the views are incredible, and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular!!

• Terragust – One of the most unique dining experiences on the island, with long farm-to-table dinners surrounded by vineyards and countryside.

• Sa Farinera – A fantastic spot for traditional Mallorcan food. The grilled meats are excellent, and the homemade desserts are worth saving room for!!

• Bar Bosch – A Palma institution known for its famous llagosta sandwich, great coffee, and prime people-watching.

• Sea Club at Cap Rocat – One of the most romantic spots on the island, especially at sunset. Perfect for a special dinner!!

What should everyone eat while visiting Mallorca?

Cata: A proper ensaïmada!!

It’s Mallorca’s most famous pastry for a reason. Locals grow up eating them for breakfast, as an afternoon treat, or alongside a coffee. If you’re only going to try one thing in Mallorca, make it an ensaïmada!! My favorite place to get one is Can Joan de s’Aigo in Palma.

I’d also recommend trying sobrasada, fresh seafood, tumbet, and anything made with local olive oil and seasonal ingredients.

Where’s the best sunset spot in Mallorca?

Cata: Sa Foradada, for sure!!

It’s one of those places that never gets old. The views are incredible, and watching the sun set behind the famous rock formation feels pretty magical every time.

I also love Cap de Formentor for its dramatic cliffs and sea views. And while it’s not technically a sunset spot, I have to mention Sa Calobra. The drive through the Tramuntana mountains is one of my favorite experiences on the island.

Honestly, you can’t go wrong... Mallorca does sunsets very well!!

What are the most beautiful hotels in Mallorca?

Cata: La Residencia, without a doubt!!

Even though I grew up in Mallorca, I still think it’s one of the most special places on the island. The mountain setting, the gardens, the views, the art... it feels like everything people love about Mallorca in one place.

If you’re looking for other beautiful hotels around the island, these are always at the top of my list:

• La Residencia – The iconic Mallorca hotel. Even if you’re not staying there, go for a coffee, a drink, or dinner at El Olivo.

• Grand Hotel Son Net – A stunning countryside retreat surrounded by mountains, vineyards, and gardens. It’s elegant, peaceful, and feels like a hidden escape just outside Palma.

• Es Racó d’Artà – A beautiful wellness retreat surrounded by olive groves and mountains. Peaceful, design-focused, and deeply connected to nature.

• Sant Francesc Hotel Singular – One of my favorite hotels in Palma, with a beautiful rooftop and an amazing location in the Old Town.

When is the best time to visit Mallorca?

Cata: May, June, September, or October!!

Most people automatically book July and August, but honestly, those are my least favorite months. The beaches are busier, restaurants are harder to book, and it can get very hot.

Late spring and early autumn are perfect. The weather is still beautiful, the sea is warm enough to swim, and the island feels much more relaxed.

If you can avoid peak summer, do it... you’ll have a completely different experience!!

What’s the best way to get around Mallorca?

Cata: Rent a car. No question!!

Mallorca is much bigger than most people expect, and some of the island’s best beaches, villages, and viewpoints are difficult to reach without one.

I’ve had friends visit without a car and end up spending hours on crowded buses instead of actually enjoying the island.

Just make sure to book ahead, especially in summer. I’d also recommend choosing a smaller car for the narrow Tramuntana roads, and if you can’t drive stick-shift, double-check that you’re booking an automatic!!

Is Mallorca safe for tourists?

Cata: Very safe!!

Mallorca sometimes gets a reputation because of places like Magaluf, but that’s just a tiny part of the island. Most visitors spend their time exploring beaches, villages, restaurants, and the countryside, where the atmosphere is much more relaxed.

I’ve lived here my whole life, and Mallorca has always felt safe and easy to travel around. Whether you’re exploring Palma, having dinner in a village, or road-tripping across the island, it’s a very comfortable place to visit.

Of course, use the same common sense you would anywhere. Keep an eye on your belongings in busy areas and don’t leave valuables visible in your rental car.

But honestly, safety is not something I’d worry about when planning a trip here!!

What are your top Mallorca travel tips?

Cata: Mallorca is a pretty easy destination, but there are a few things I’d tell everyone before they visit!!

• Bring a cooler bag – One of my favorite Mallorca hacks!! Fill it with cold drinks, fruit, and snacks from a local supermarket before heading to the beach.

• Carry some cash – Most places take cards, but it’s still useful for beach parking, markets, and smaller local cafés.

• Don’t spend the whole day in a bikini – Mallorca is relaxed, but if you’re wandering through villages, shopping, or stopping for lunch, you’ll want to throw on a cover-up. Water shoes are also handy for some of the rockier coves.

• Check the driving requirements before you arrive – Depending on where you’re visiting from, you may need an International Driving Permit.

• Pack for sunny days and cooler evenings – Sunscreen, a good pair of sunglasses (I love my KHAITE x Oliver Peoples 1983C pair!), and a light layer are all essentials. Mallorca is usually warm, but evenings in the Tramuntana mountains can be surprisingly cool.

Honestly, my biggest piece of advice is not to overcomplicate it. Mallorca isn’t the kind of place where you need to rush around checking things off a list.

Pick a few places you really want to see, leave some room for spontaneity, and enjoy the slower pace. That’s when Mallorca is at its best!!

So before you start booking flights and filling your suitcase, here are my favorite Europe travel tips to help you plan a smoother, easier, and more enjoyable trip.

1. Book the Big Things Early

If you’re visiting Europe in summer, don’t leave everything until the last minute!!

Summer is by far the busiest time of year, and the best hotels, tours, and restaurants can book out surprisingly quickly.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard people say they wanted to stay at La Residencia in Mallorca, Casa Monti in Rome, or Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Lake Como... only to discover there wasn’t a single room left.

The same goes for popular beach clubs, sunset cruises, cooking classes, and attraction tickets.

2. Pack Less Than You Think You Need

If there’s one Europe travel tip I wish more people followed, it’s this: don’t overpack!!

Every year I see people hauling giant suitcases up train station stairs, across cobblestone streets, and through busy city centers. Trust me... it gets old very quickly.

The reality is you’ll probably wear the same favorite outfits on repeat and end up using far less than you packed!!

Instead, focus on a few Europe travel essentials I never leave home without:

• Portable charger + universal travel adapter — You’ll use your phone far more than you think for maps, tickets, bookings, and photos.

• Comfortable shoes — You’ll walk far more than you think!! I usually pack comfortable sneakers (I love Veja and Salomon), flip-flops like this one, and a pair of Spanish espadrilles for evenings out (although you can absolutely bring heels if you want to!!).

• Mini portable fan + jacket — Summer afternoons can be incredibly hot, while trains, planes, and evenings can feel surprisingly chilly.

• Quick-dry towel + cover-up — I love Dock & Bay Towels for traveling because they take up almost no space (though Weezie Towels are my summer favorite!!). And don’t forget a cover-up for beach days — many restaurants, shops, and ferries won’t allow you in just a bikini.

• A small medicine kit — Hopefully you’ll never need it... but you’ll be very glad it’s there if you do.

As for backpack vs suitcase? Honestly, both work. I usually travel with my Away Flex Carry-On because it’s the perfect size for Europe travel, but a backpack can definitely make life easier if you’re moving around a lot.

3. Get Up Early (At Least Sometimes!)

I know... waking up early on vacation isn’t exactly what most people dream about.

But trust me on this one!!

Some of Europe’s most famous places feel completely different before everyone else arrives.

The Trevi Fountain in Rome, the Duomo in Florence, the streets of Santorini, Park Güell in Barcelona... they’re magical first thing in the morning. A few hours later? Not so much. 😅

Getting up early means fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, shorter lines, and much better photos. Then, when the afternoon crowds arrive, you can slow down, enjoy a long lunch, relax by the pool, or wander without a plan.

4. Use Common Sense and Stay Safe

One of the reasons I love traveling in Europe is that it’s generally very safe and easy to explore.

That said, a few simple habits can make your trip even smoother — especially in busy tourist destinations!!

Here’s what I always do:

• Use a secure crossbody bag. Pickpockets can be common around major attractions, train stations, and public transportation. I love the Uniqlo Crochet Drawstring Bag for everyday sightseeing, but a basket bag like the Sézane Justine Basket Bag is perfect for beach towns and summer destinations.

• Stay connected from the moment you land. I always set up an Airalo eSIM before I arrive so I can access maps, translations, train tickets, and booking confirmations immediately.

• Keep an eye on your luggage. Especially on trains, in stations, and at airports. I always try to sit where I can see my bag.

• Share your plans with someone. Particularly if you’re traveling solo. I also travel with an AirTag and a luggage lock for a little extra peace of mind.

• Don’t overdo it on nights out. Europe is incredibly fun, but you’ll make better decisions when you’re aware of your surroundings.

Most importantly, trust your instincts. If a situation feels off, walk away. I’ve found that a little awareness and common sense go a very long way when traveling in Europe.

5. Don't Skip Travel Insurance

This probably isn’t the most exciting Europe travel tip on the list... but it might be one of the most important!!

Nobody books a trip expecting to lose their luggage, miss a flight, get sick, or need medical care abroad. But after years of traveling, I’ve learned that unexpected things happen more often than you’d think.

That’s why I never travel without insurance.

Personally, I use and recommend SafetyWing because it’s affordable, easy to set up, and works well if you’re visiting multiple countries on the same trip.

Hopefully you’ll never need it... but if something does go wrong, you’ll be very glad you have it.

6. Stay in Hostels (If It Fits Your Travel Style)

I know hostels aren’t for everyone... but if you’re traveling solo, on a budget, or simply hoping to meet other travelers, they can completely change your Europe trip!!

The best hostels today are nothing like many people imagine. Many have privacy curtains, female-only dorms, organized activities, and beautiful common spaces that make meeting people incredibly easy.

A few hostel brands I consistently recommend:

• Wombat’s — Great social hostels in cities like London, Vienna, Budapest, and Munich.

• YellowSquare — My favorite for Rome, Milan, Florence, and Athens. Fun, social, and perfect for solo travelers.

• Generator — Cheap hostels in cities like Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Copenhagen.

7. Bring the Right Bank Card

One of the easiest ways to save money in Europe is setting up the right bank card before your trip.

Personally, I use Revolut and recommend it to almost everyone.The exchange rates are great, there are no foreign transaction fees, and it makes traveling between countries much easier.

The good news? You won’t need much cash. These days, you can pay by card or Apple Pay almost everywhere, from cafés and supermarkets to hotels and train stations. I usually carry a little cash for markets, small bakeries, or the occasional cash-only business, but that’s about it.

8. Use Public Transportation

One thing first-time visitors often underestimate is just how good public transportation is in Europe.

The metro, buses, trams, and trains are usually affordable, reliable, and often faster than sitting in traffic. You definitely don’t need to Uber everywhere!!

Google Maps makes it incredibly easy to navigate, with real-time directions, platform information, and public transportation schedules. It might feel intimidating on your first day, but you’ll get the hang of it much faster than you think!!

9. Do the Touristy Stuff

I love finding local cafés, getting lost in quiet neighborhoods, and discovering places that never make it into guidebooks.

But don’t skip the famous attractions either!!

The Colosseum, the Eiffel Tower, the Sagrada Família, or the Acropolis are famous for a reason. Yes, they’re busy. Yes, they’re touristy. But some places really do live up to the hype.

In fact, some of my biggest travel regrets are the attractions I skipped because I thought they would be “too touristy.”

A few Europe experiences I always recommend:

• A boat tour in Milos — the water is so blue it almost doesn’t look real. You’ll spend the day swimming in hidden coves, jumping off the boat, and visiting beaches you can’t reach by car.

• A cooking class in Italy — making fresh pasta, drinking unlimited wine, and meeting other travelers? Honestly, it’s hard not to have a good time!!

• Tandem paragliding in Interlaken — soaring above the Swiss Alps is something you’ll never forget!! The views alone make it worth it.

• The Harry Potter Studio Tour near London — a must-do for Harry Potter fans and one of the best family-friendly experiences in Europe!!

• A guided tour of the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica — having a guide brings centuries of history and art to life in a completely different way.

10. Remember: You Don’t Have to See Everything

One of the biggest mistakes I see first-time visitors make is trying to do too much.

Europe looks small on a map, but it’s a whole continent and it’s absolutely impossible to see everything in one trip!!

Yes, do some research and have a plan. But don’t try to squeeze every attraction, city, and day trip into a single vacation.

Instead, give yourself time to actually enjoy the places you’re visiting. Stay a little longer, say yes to spontaneous adventures, and don’t stress if you don’t see everything. You can always come back for the rest!!

🌙 They Change the Entire Pace of a Trip

Don’t get me wrong — big hotels absolutely have their place!! If you’re traveling with kids, staying near an airport, or want lots of facilities in one place, they can be a great option.

But for me personally, after a few days, the crowds, giant breakfast buffets, and constant activity can start to feel a little overwhelming.

That’s what I love about boutique hotels. They’re smaller, quieter, and somehow make it easier to slow down and actually enjoy where you are.

I noticed this so much at places like Riad Brummell in Marrakech and Al Moudira Hotel in Luxor. Outside, everything felt busy and nonstop. Inside, it was peaceful courtyards, beautiful rooms, long breakfasts, and lazy afternoons by the pool.

Honestly, having that calm retreat to come back to each day made me enjoy those trips so much more!!

✨ The Small Details Start Feeling Like Luxury

I used to think luxury meant giant pools, marble bathrooms, and someone carrying your suitcase before you even touched it.

The more I travel, the more I’ve realized that the hotels I remember most aren’t necessarily the biggest or most expensive.

They’re the ones that make you feel comfortable, cared for, and genuinely happy to be there. The kind of places you find yourself looking forward to returning to after a day of exploring.

Now, luxury feels much quieter.

• Fresh flowers and homemade pastries at breakfast

• Linen sheets and oversized robes after a long day out

• A handwritten note waiting in your room

• Soft lighting, beautiful books, and rooms that actually feel lived in

• Someone remembering your coffee order the next morning

Those details might sound small, but they’re often what transform a hotel from somewhere you sleep into somewhere you genuinely enjoy spending time.

That’s exactly what I loved about Thyme England in the Cotswolds and Casa Monti in Rome. Everything felt thoughtful and intentional, from the design to the service. They felt less like hotels and more like staying at a friend’s house (if your friend had exceptionally good taste!!).

💸 They’re Not Always More Expensive

This honestly surprised me too!!

For years, I assumed boutique hotels automatically meant luxury prices. But that’s really not always the case.

In places like Hong Kong, Portugal, Thailand, and Egypt, I’ve often found beautiful boutique hotels for the same price as a fairly standard chain hotel nearby. Sometimes they’re even cheaper.

And even when they do cost a little more, I usually find they offer much better value. You’re not just paying for a bed — you’re paying for atmosphere, character, thoughtful design, and an experience you'll actually remember long after the trip is over!!

🕯️ The Hotels I Still Think About Years Later

The best hotels aren’t always five-star resorts. Some don’t even have stars at all.

They’re not always on the biggest hotel lists or flooding your Instagram feed either. Sometimes they almost feel like they don’t want to be discovered... which honestly makes finding them feel even more special.

A few hotels I still think about years later (and would book again in a heartbeat!!):

• Wild Coast Tented Lodge (Yala, Sri Lanka) — luxury safari tents where the jungle meets the ocean, incredible wildlife sightings, and some of the best service I’ve ever experienced.

• TOKI Retreat Vân Long (Ninh Binh, Vietnam) — a peaceful hideaway surrounded by rice fields, with beautiful minimalist design, free bikes, and a wonderfully slow pace of life.

• Babylonstoren (Franschhoek, South Africa) — part hotel, part farm, part wine estate, with stunning gardens, friendly donkeys, fantastic food, and enough activities to fill an entire weekend.

• Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay (outside Paris, France) — a 12th-century Gothic abbey surrounded by forests and lakes that feels completely removed from everyday life.

• De Durgerdam (Amsterdam, Netherlands) — a historic fisherman’s inn on the water with cozy interiors, complimentary bikes, and beautiful lake views.

None of these hotels stand out because they're the fanciest (although some definitely are!!). They stand out because of how they made me feel while I was there.

And honestly, I think that's what the best boutique hotels do so well. Years later, you might forget the room number or what you paid, but you'll still remember how you felt having breakfast in that courtyard or watching the sunset from that terrace.

Would I Still Stay in Big Hotels?

Honestly… yes, sometimes!!

If I’m arriving late, staying near an airport, or just need something easy and predictable, big hotels absolutely make sense.

But when I really want to fall in love with a destination, boutique hotels almost always make the trip feel slower, calmer, and much more memorable.

Best Time to Visit Amsterdam 🌷

Honestly, there’s never really a bad time to visit Amsterdam — the city just feels completely different depending on the season.

• Spring (March–May) — Probably the prettiest season by far!! Tulips bloom everywhere, café terraces start filling up again, and the canals look straight out of Pinterest. April is honestly my favorite month to visit.

• Summer (June–August) — Long sunny days, canal cruises, packed terraces, and people sitting outside until late at night.

• Autumn (September–November) — Cozy, calmer, rainy, and honestly VERY underrated. This is peak candlelit wine bar season!

• Winter (December–February) — Cold but incredibly atmospheric with canal lights, Christmas markets, and even an ice rink at Museumplein.

How Many Days Do You Need in Amsterdam? ⏳

I honestly think 2–3 days is PERFECT for a first Amsterdam trip.

That gives you enough time to visit the big sights (the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House are absolute musts!!), do a canal cruise, bike through Vondelpark, and properly explore neighborhoods like Jordaan and De Pijp without feeling rushed.

If you have an extra day, I’d definitely recommend getting outside the city. Places like Zaanse Schans for the windmills, Haarlem, or the Keukenhof tulip fields in spring are all super easy day trips and completely worth it.

Best Areas to Stay in Amsterdam 🏨

Where you stay in Amsterdam honestly makes SUCH a difference. The city isn’t huge, but every neighborhood has a completely different vibe.

• Jordaan + Nine Streets — Easily my favorite area in Amsterdam!! Quiet canals, boutique hotels, tiny cafés, vintage shops, and that full classic Amsterdam atmosphere. Hotels like The Hoxton or The Rosewood Amsterdam are PERFECT for a first trip.

• De Pijp — Probably the best area for cafés, brunch, wine bars, and cute boutiques. Don’t miss Albert Cuyp Market for fresh stroopwafels!!

• Amsterdam Noord — More creative and modern with rooftop bars, cool hotels, and slightly cheaper prices. Sir Adam Hotel is probably the best-known stay here.

• Oud-West — Stylish but slightly calmer, with great cafés, Foodhallen nearby, and super easy access to Vondelpark.

Even if you don’t stay in every area, I’d definitely recommend exploring all of them — especially Jordaan and De Pijp. They’re filled with incredible little boutiques, wine bars, and some of the best coffee spots in the city ✨

My Favorite Amsterdam Hotels 🛏️

Accommodation is honestly the MOST expensive part of visiting Amsterdam… so definitely research properly and book early if you find somewhere you love!!

• The Hoxton, Amsterdam — Probably the best boutique hotel for a first trip. Amazing canal location, cozy interiors, cute photobooth, and Lotti’s downstairs is perfect for coffee or drinks.

• Sir Adam Hotel — One of the coolest hotels in Amsterdam. Located inside the A’DAM Tower with insane city views, record players in the rooms, and really fun music-inspired interiors.

• Volkshotel — SUCH a good budget-friendly option with colorful interiors, rooftop hot tubs and saunas, coworking spaces, fun events, and compact cabin-style rooms. CityHub Amsterdam and Generator Amsterdam are also great cheaper stays

• Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium — Easily one of the most luxurious hotels in Amsterdam with an incredible spa, Taiko restaurant, Ottolenghi downstairs, and a PERFECT location near Museumplein.

• De Durgerdam — A peaceful boutique hotel inside a historic fisherman’s inn with warm minimalist interiors and beautiful lake views. Perfect for slower mornings, bike rides, and romantic weekend escapes ✨

How to Get Around Amsterdam 🚲

Amsterdam is honestly one of the EASIEST cities to explore in Europe. Once you understand the bikes and trams, everything feels super simple!!

• Walking — Easily the best way to explore. Most central neighborhoods are very walkable, and wandering around the canals is honestly part of the experience.

• Trams — Probably the easiest public transport option for visitors. You can tap your Visa or Mastercard directly when getting on and off — just don’t forget to tap out!!

• Schiphol Airport Train — The fastest and easiest way into the city center. It takes around 15–20 minutes and usually costs around €5.50–€12. You can also take the bus, Uber, or a taxi if you arrive late at night.

• Bikes — Renting a bike is honestly a MUST at least once!! Just remember locals bike VERY fast, so stay aware and avoid standing in bike lanes 😭

• Ferries to Amsterdam Noord — Completely free, super easy, and running 24/7 from behind Amsterdam Centraal.

You really do NOT need a car in Amsterdam itself. Parking is expensive, streets are narrow, and public transport works great. A car only really becomes useful for countryside day trips like Zaanse Schans, Haarlem, or the Keukenhof tulip fields

What To Do in Amsterdam ✨

Apart from wandering the neighborhoods, café hopping, and shopping, here are some things I’d genuinely recommend doing in Amsterdam!!

1. Do a canal cruise — One of the BEST ways to start your trip and get a feel for the city!! I personally recommend Flagship Amsterdam for their smaller boats, sunset cruises, and unlimited cheese and drinks options.

2. Visit the Anne Frank House — One of the most emotional places to visit in Amsterdam. Tickets cost around €25 with the audio guide, sell out VERY fast, and are absolutely worth booking in advance.

3. Relax in Vondelpark — Amsterdam’s most famous park and the perfect place for a slow afternoon picnic, coffee, or bike ride during spring and summer.

4. Visit Museumplein — Home to Amsterdam’s biggest museums including Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Moco Museum, and Stedelijk Museum. Tickets are usually around €20–€25 each, so honestly I’d just pick 1–2 museums instead of trying to rush through everything.

5. Visit Hortus Botanicus — One of the oldest botanical gardens in the world and such a peaceful break from the busy city center.

6. Do the Heineken Experience — Touristy, yes… but honestly still really fun if you enjoy beer or interactive experiences. Afterwards, grab fresh stroopwafels at Albert Cuyp Market.

7. Walk around the Red Light District — Even if nightlife is not your thing, it’s still one of the most famous and historic parts of Amsterdam. If you want more context, this Red Light District walking tour is honestly a really good option. Just be respectful and never take photos!

8. Visit the markets — The Flower Market is the most famous, but I also loved Noordermarkt for pastries and flowers, Waterlooplein for vintage shopping, and IJ-Hallen in Amsterdam Noord for thrifting.

Day Trips From Amsterdam 🌷

After 2–3 days exploring Amsterdam itself, I’d definitely recommend getting outside the city because some of the prettiest Dutch scenery is honestly in the countryside!!

• Zaanse Schans + Volendam + Marken — The most popular Amsterdam day trip with windmills, cheese farms, canals, and traditional Dutch villages all in one day. You can visit independently, but this Zaanse Schans, Volendam & Marken tour makes everything MUCH easier.

• Haarlem — One of my favorite easy day trips with canals, boutiques, cozy cafés, and a much calmer atmosphere than Amsterdam. If you’re visiting with kids, Fruittuin van West is also a really cute stop nearby.

• The Hague + Delft — The Hague feels elegant and coastal, while Delft is calmer with canals, traditional Dutch architecture, and famous blue-and-white ceramics.

• Keukenhof & the tulip fields — Absolutely worth it during tulip season!! This Keukenhof shuttle + entry ticket is probably the easiest option because transport is included and you can return whenever you want.

Best Cafés & Brunch Spots ☕️

Amsterdam’s café scene is honestly SO good. Between the specialty coffee spots, beautiful bakeries, and cozy brunch cafés… it’s basically impossible to fit everything into one trip!!

• SAINT-JEAN Bakery — Incredible vegan bakery with AMAZING pastries (the pistachio croissant is a MUST!!), plus really good coffee and matcha.

• Uncommon — Minimalist specialty coffee café near Vondelpark with amazing banana bread and one of the best flat whites in the city.

• LOCALS — One of Amsterdam’s most popular brunch spots with huge plates and really good coffee. The avocado salmon toast was SO good!

• YUSU — Trendy little café for matcha, coffee, and slow mornings. I loved the fig cheesecake and sunny outdoor seating.

• Haku —Calm Japanese-inspired café with really good matcha, soft cakes, and a much quieter atmosphere than some of the busier brunch places.

Restaurants Worth Visiting 🍝

Amsterdam’s food scene has improved SO much over the last few years, and there are genuinely so many great places to eat now. These are a few restaurants I’d actually recommend adding to your itinerary!!

• Buurtcafé De Tros — Cozy candlelit neighborhood restaurant near Oosterpark with great wines, seasonal dishes, warm sourdough bread, and one of the best smash burgers in Amsterdam.

• Gertrude Rest. & Bar — Great spot for seasonal small plates, natural wines, and outdoor terrace seating during warmer months.

• Fiaschetteria Pistoia — Tiny Tuscan-style Italian restaurant famous for fresh pasta, truffle tagliatelle, and tiramisu. Definitely book ahead because it fills up FAST.

• CUE Amsterdam — Michelin-starred listening bar with Japanese-inspired dishes, creative cocktails, vinyl music, and a super cool atmosphere.

• Foodhallen — Huge indoor food hall with loads of different food stalls. Perfect for something casual or if everyone wants completely different food options!!

Food You HAVE To Try 🍟

I’ve already mentioned restaurants, but these are the viral Amsterdam food spots you honestly HAVE to try at least once. Just go early because the lines get CRAZY 😭

• Winkel 43 — Famous for their warm apple pie with whipped cream. SO good after a rainy canal walk.

• Fabel Friet — Viral fries with parmesan and truffle mayo that genuinely live up to the hype.

• Van Stapele Koekmakerij — Famous cookie with melted white chocolate inside. Yes, the queue is insane. Yes, it’s worth it.

• Van Wonderen Stroopwafels — Famous for loaded stroopwafels covered in chocolate, marshmallows, and candy. Honestly delicious, but you can also find cheaper fresh stroopwafels all around Amsterdam.

• Chun Café — Viral Korean-style sandwich spot famous for buttery brioche sandwiches and really good matcha. The beef bulgogi is definitely the best one.

Best Shopping in Amsterdam 🛍️

Amsterdam is SUCH a good city for shopping — especially if you love concept stores, vintage shopping, homeware, stationery, and little unique finds you won’t see everywhere else.

• Boothclub Amsterdam — Cute photobooth spots around the city (including inside The Hoxton!) that honestly make such a fun little Amsterdam souvenir.

• Carmen Amsterdam — Beautiful concept store with fashion, beauty, books, homeware, and gifts. Their café is also great for brunch, and you can even stay in the guesthouse upstairs.

• Misc Store — Beautiful Japanese-inspired store with stationery, ceramics, incense, candles, and little lifestyle pieces.

• Anna + Nina — One of my FAVORITE Amsterdam (and London!!) shops for colorful homeware, jewelry, tableware, and beautifully curated interiors. I’m honestly obsessed with their mugs ☕

• Tony’s Chocolonely Superstore — Such a fun stop for gifts and customizable chocolate bars. The LEGO Store nearby is also worth visiting if you’re traveling with kids!!

What To Pack for Amsterdam 🧥

Amsterdam weather changes FAST, so packing the right basics makes a HUGE difference — especially if you’re walking around the city all day!!

• A good coat you can layer — Probably the item I wore most in Amsterdam!! My COS wool-trimmed car coat made every outfit feel more elevated while still keeping me warm. I layered it with my Uniqlo ultra light down jacket at night.

• Waterproof shoes + umbrella — Random rain showers happen ALL the time, even in spring and summer. Comfortable waterproof shoes are honestly essential here.

• Portable charger — My phone battery disappears SO fast in Amsterdam between Google Maps, tram tickets, restaurant reservations, and photos. My small Anker portable charger comes everywhere with me now.

• A bigger everyday bag — Amsterdam is such a walking city!! I loved having my DeMellier New York handbag because it fit my Kindle, headphones, water bottle, umbrella, and snacks without feeling bulky.

• Travel insurance — Especially important if you’re visiting multiple countries in Europe. I personally use SafetyWing because it’s affordable, easy to set up online, and gives me peace of mind while traveling.

Things to Know Before Visiting Amsterdam ✨

A few random things that will make your Amsterdam trip MUCH easier:

• Book hotels, restaurants, and attractions early — Especially during spring and summer because popular spots like The Hoxton, the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, and the best brunch cafés sell out VERY fast.

• Museums close earlier than people expect — Most close around 5–6 PM, so don’t leave everything for the evening.

• Watch the bike lanes 🚲— Amsterdam is very safe, even for solo travelers, but the bikes move FAST and locals absolutely expect you to know where you’re walking.

• Cards are used almost everywhere — Amsterdam is becoming very cashless, and many places are card-only now. I usually use Revolut while traveling because it helps avoid foreign transaction fees.

• English is spoken basically everywhere — One of the easiest European cities to visit if it’s your first trip to Europe.

• Get an eSIM before arriving — It makes using Google Maps, tram tickets, and restaurant bookings SO much easier from the moment you land. I usually use Airalo in Europe because it’s quick to set up and super convenient.

I’m a very type-A oldest daughter… which basically means I LOVE researching trips almost as much as taking them!!

I love saving way too many restaurants, comparing hotels for hours, building organized itineraries, and figuring out what’s actually worth my time and money before I go.

But I never want travel to feel rushed or like I’m trying to see absolutely everything.
